fox-fire

Fungal wood glow

Fox-fire is the faint glow emitted by certain fungi growing on decaying wood, caused by bioluminescence.

The eerie light appears in forests at night, historically attributed to supernatural causes before its biological explanation was understood.

Also spelled foxfire.
