founding of Rome

Romulus establishes city

The founding of Rome refers to the legendary establishment of the city, traditionally dated to 753 BCE.

Roman mythology attributed it to Romulus, who with his twin brother Remus was raised by a she-wolf before Romulus killed Remus and became the first king.

The phrase appears in historical discussions and the Latin abbreviation AUC (*ab urbe condita*, "from the founding of the city"), which Romans used to date events: The temple was dedicated in 509 AUC.
