foundation crack
Structural base split
A foundation crack is a fissure in the concrete or masonry base of a building.
Some cracks are cosmetic—hairline fractures from normal settling.
Others signal structural problems: horizontal cracks from soil pressure, stair-step cracks in block walls, or widening vertical cracks that indicate shifting.
The inspector found a foundation crack in the basement wall.
