box cutter

Carton-opening blade

A box cutter is a small handheld tool with a retractable razor blade, used for slicing open cardboard boxes and other packaging.

The blade extends from a handle and can be pushed back in when not in use.

Also called a utility knife or Stanley knife (British).

Box cutters gained notoriety after their use as weapons in the September 11, 2001 hijackings.
