fights to the finish
Battles until concluded
Fights to the finish are contests that continue until one side achieves complete victory—no time limits, no judges' decisions.
The phrase appears in boxing and wrestling but extends to any struggle that won't end in compromise: The election became a fight to the finish between two candidates who refused to concede.
