battery hens
Factory-farmed egg producers
Battery hens are egg-laying chickens kept in small wire cages stacked in rows, the standard method of industrial egg production.
The term is usually critical, emphasizing the cramped, factory-like conditions: Free-range eggs cost more than battery hen eggs, but at least the chickens aren't suffering.
Eggs from non-battery systems are often marketed as "cage-free" or "free-range."
