field telephone

Portable military phone

A field telephone is a portable telephone designed for military use in combat zones, connecting command posts to front-line positions via wire.

Unlike civilian phones, field telephones are ruggedized to withstand harsh conditions and rough handling: The sergeant cranked the field telephone to reach headquarters.

The technology dates to World War I but remained in use through the twentieth century.
