festival of lights
Illumination-centered holiday event
A festival of lights is any celebration centered on the ceremonial lighting of lamps, candles, or other illumination.
The phrase most often refers to Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple, or to Diwali, the Hindu festival celebrating the victory of light over darkness.
Other traditions have their own festivals of lights: The town's festival of lights draws thousands of visitors each December.
