eight nights
Festival of Lights
Eight nights refers to the duration of Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, which lasts eight consecutive nights.
The phrase appears in descriptions of the holiday's rituals—lighting candles, spinning dreidels, exchanging gifts: We celebrate for eight nights.
It has become shorthand for the holiday itself, especially in contrast to Christmas.
