falls through

Plans become nothing

Falls through describes a plan, deal, or arrangement that fails to happen after seeming likely or certain.

The image is of something that was supposed to hold but didn't—you fall through ice that looked solid, a sale falls through when financing collapses: The merger fell through at the last minute, Our vacation plans fell through when she got sick.

Unlike simply failing, falling through implies the thing was already underway or expected.
