falls down
Trips and collapses
Falls down describes losing balance and ending up on the ground or a lower surface: The toddler falls down constantly while learning to walk.
While fall alone often suffices, the addition of down emphasizes the downward motion or completion of the action.
Falls down also applies figuratively to plans or arguments that collapse: The whole theory falls down when you examine the evidence.
