fairway bunker
Sandy golf hazard
A fairway bunker is a sand trap positioned in the fairway of a golf hole, typically 150 to 250 yards from the tee.
Unlike greenside bunkers designed to protect the putting surface, fairway bunkers punish wayward drives and force decisions about whether to lay up or attempt a longer shot from the sand: His drive landed in the fairway bunker, leaving him 180 yards to the pin.
