explosion-proof
Safe from blasts
Explosion-proof describes equipment designed to contain internal explosions or prevent ignition of surrounding flammable gases, vapors, or dust.
The term applies mainly to electrical devices used in hazardous industrial environments—refineries, mines, chemical plants: explosion-proof lighting, explosion-proof motors.
The equipment doesn't prevent explosions entirely but ensures they don't propagate to the surrounding atmosphere.
