exfiltrating

Covertly removing data

Exfiltrating is the covert removal of data, personnel, or materials from a secured location.

The term comes from military and intelligence contexts—extracting an agent from hostile territory, smuggling documents past security.

In cybersecurity, it describes unauthorized transfer of data out of a network: The malware was exfiltrating customer records to overseas servers.
