erusin
Hebrew engagement ceremony
Erusin is the Jewish betrothal ceremony, the first stage of traditional marriage.
Unlike modern engagement, erusin creates a legally binding state—the couple is considered married for purposes of Jewish law, though they don't yet live together.
The second stage, nissuin, completes the marriage.
Today both ceremonies typically occur together under the wedding canopy.
