equal suffrage
Universal ballot access
Equal suffrage is the principle that all citizens should have the same voting rights regardless of sex, race, property ownership, or other distinctions.
The term was particularly prominent during the women's suffrage movement, when advocates fought for women to have the same access to the ballot as men.
The equal suffrage amendment finally passed after decades of activism.
Today the phrase is largely historical, having been superseded by simply calling it voting rights or universal suffrage.
