epithelial barrier
Cell layer shield
The epithelial barrier is the layer of tightly connected cells lining body surfaces—skin, gut, lungs, blood vessels—that controls what passes in and out.
This barrier protects against pathogens, toxins, and dehydration while allowing selective absorption of nutrients and gases.
When compromised, as in leaky gut syndrome or damaged skin, substances cross that shouldn't: Researchers found the epithelial barrier had broken down, allowing bacteria into the bloodstream.
