encage
Put behind bars
To encage is to confine in or as if in a cage: The bird was encaged behind iron bars.
The word appears mostly in literary or poetic contexts, where it often carries figurative weight—souls encaged in bodies, spirits encaged by circumstance.
A less common variant of the more familiar cage (as a verb).
