emergents

Those breaking through

Emergents are the tallest trees in a rainforest, rising above the main canopy to stand alone against sky and wind.

The term extends to anything that emerges from a larger system—in philosophy and science, emergent properties arise from complex interactions but can't be predicted from the parts alone: Consciousness is among the most debated emergents in philosophy of mind.

In ecology, emergents also refers to aquatic plants that grow up through the water surface.
