electrometers
Electrical potential detectors
Electrometers are instruments that measure electric charge or voltage with extremely high precision and sensitivity.
They detect currents too small for ordinary voltmeters to register, making them essential in physics laboratories and radiation detection: The electrometer measured the ionization produced by the radioactive sample.
Early electrometers used gold leaf that would deflect in response to charge; modern versions are electronic.
