electromagnetic pulses

Electronics-destroying energy waves

Electromagnetic pulses, usually shortened to EMPs, are sudden bursts of electromagnetic energy that can disrupt or destroy electronic equipment and electrical systems.

They occur naturally from lightning strikes or solar flares, but the term most often appears in discussions of nuclear weapons detonated at high altitude, which could theoretically knock out power grids and electronics across wide areas.

The military hardened its communications systems against electromagnetic pulses.
