Carrington event
Massive geomagnetic disturbance
A Carrington event is a massive solar storm capable of disrupting electrical systems on Earth.
Named for Richard Carrington, who observed the 1859 solar flare that caused telegraph systems to fail worldwide, the term now describes any geomagnetic storm of similar magnitude.
Scientists warn a modern Carrington event could knock out power grids and satellite communications for extended periods.
