edgeland

City's ragged margin

Edgelands are the transitional zones between urban and rural areas—those scrappy, overlooked landscapes of warehouses, waste ground, electricity pylons, and overgrown lots that ring cities.

The term gained currency from a 2011 book by Paul Farley and Michael Symmons Roberts that explored these in-between spaces.

Neither fully developed nor truly wild, edgelands resist easy categorization: The old rail yards and sewage works formed a classic edgeland.

The word often carries connotations of neglected beauty or ecological possibility.
