economic zones
Designated commerce areas
Economic zones are designated geographic areas where different rules apply to business activity—typically offering tax breaks, relaxed regulations, or other incentives to attract investment.
A special economic zone might waive import duties; a free trade zone allows goods to pass without customs processing.
Countries create economic zones to stimulate development in specific regions or sectors.
The term also appears in exclusive economic zone, the oceanic area extending 200 nautical miles from a nation's coast, where that country controls fishing and resource extraction.
