early warning radar
Distant danger spotter
Early warning radar is a long-range radar system designed to detect incoming aircraft, missiles, or other threats at great distances, providing time to mount a defense.
These systems were developed during the Cold War to watch for nuclear attacks: The early warning radar picked up the incoming bombers while they were still over the Atlantic.
The term extends to any system that provides advance notice of danger.
