dry heaved
Stomach convulsed fruitlessly
Dry heaved is the past tense of dry heave—to retch without vomiting, the body going through the motions of throwing up while producing nothing.
It describes the involuntary spasms that follow actual vomiting or occur when the stomach is empty: She dry heaved over the toilet for ten minutes.
The term also applies to gagging from disgust or nausea that doesn't result in vomit.
