dry heave
Vomit without vomiting
A dry heave is a spasm of retching without actually vomiting—the body goes through the motions of throwing up, but nothing comes out.
It typically happens when the stomach is already empty or when nausea persists after vomiting: She spent the morning dry heaving over the toilet.
Also used as a verb: The smell made him dry heave.
