drug czar

Anti-substance policy head

A drug czar is a government official responsible for coordinating national drug control policy.

The term gained currency in the United States with the creation of the Office of National Drug Control Policy in 1988.

Czar here follows the pattern of other informal titles for officials with sweeping authority over a single issue: energy czar, terrorism czar.

The drug czar announced new funding for treatment programs.
