double dig
Two-layer soil work
Double dig is a gardening technique where soil is loosened to twice the normal depth—typically two spade depths.
The gardener removes the top layer, breaks up the subsoil beneath, then replaces the topsoil, often adding compost.
The method improves drainage and root penetration but is labor-intensive: I double dug the new vegetable beds last spring.
