double binds

No-win predicaments everywhere

Double binds are situations where conflicting demands make any response wrong.

The term comes from psychology, describing communication patterns where someone faces contradictory messages—often from an authority figure—with no acceptable way out: a parent who says "be more independent" but punishes autonomous choices.

More loosely, any no-win scenario: She was in a double bind—speak up and seem aggressive, stay quiet and seem weak.
