dog face

Old Army slang

Dog face is a mildly insulting term for an ugly person, suggesting they have the homely features of a dog.

In U.S. military slang, especially from World War II, a dogface was an infantry soldier—the grunt who slogged through mud and combat: The dogfaces moved out at dawn.

The term conveys both endearment and the unglamorous nature of ground combat.
