do I know you
Have we met?
A question posed to someone whose identity or familiarity is uncertain.
It can be genuine inquiry when a face seems familiar: Do I know you? You look so familiar.
More often it's rhetorical—a pointed way of establishing distance or rejecting unwanted familiarity: Excuse me, do I know you? suggests the other person is being presumptuous.
The phrase can also express shock at unexpected behavior from someone close: Who are you? Do I even know you anymore?
