diplomatic cable
Classified foreign correspondence
A diplomatic cable is an official message sent between a government and its embassies or consulates abroad.
Historically transmitted by telegraph, cables now travel through secure electronic channels but retain the name.
They report on local political conditions, convey instructions, and document sensitive negotiations: The leaked diplomatic cables revealed private assessments of foreign leaders.
Also called a diplomatic dispatch.
