dilated eye exam
Drops-then-light inspection
A dilated eye exam is an examination in which drops are used to widen the pupils, allowing an eye doctor to see more of the retina and optic nerve.
The dilation reveals conditions that wouldn't be visible otherwise—glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy.
Side effects include light sensitivity and blurred vision for several hours: I can't drive after my dilated eye exam.
