detune

Alter instrument calibration

To detune is to alter the tuning of an instrument or device away from standard pitch or frequency.

Musicians detune guitar strings for particular effects or to match a singer's range: The whole album was recorded with guitars detuned a half step.

In electronics, detuning shifts a circuit away from its resonant frequency.

The noun detune refers to this adjustment or, in synthesizers, a control that slightly offsets oscillator frequencies to create a richer, fatter sound.
