defeathering

Removing bird covering

Defeathering is the process of removing feathers from poultry, typically after slaughter during commercial processing.

The term applies both to the industrial operation and to the machines that perform it, which use rubber fingers or rotating drums to strip feathers from scalded birds.

The defeathering line processes thousands of chickens per hour.

Home processors may defeather by hand after dunking birds in hot water to loosen the plumage.
