custom plates
Personalized license tags
Custom plates are personalized license plates featuring a combination of letters, numbers, or both chosen by the vehicle owner rather than assigned by the state: His custom plates read "LVMYDOG".
They typically cost extra and must be approved by motor vehicle authorities, who reject offensive or already-claimed combinations.
Also called vanity plates or personalized plates.
