cult survivor

Left coercive group

A cult survivor is someone who has left a high-control religious or social group, often after experiencing psychological manipulation, isolation from family, or other forms of abuse.

The term emphasizes both the harmful nature of the group and the person's agency in escaping: As a cult survivor, she now helps others recognize coercive tactics.

Unlike simply "former member," survivor carries connotations of trauma and recovery.
