cryptoquip

Encoded joke puzzle

A cryptoquip is a word puzzle where a short phrase or sentence has been encrypted by letter substitution—each letter consistently replaced by another throughout.

The solver works backward to reveal the original text, often a joke or witty saying: Today's cryptoquip: "ZRRK HPPR" is "GOOD LUCK".

The puzzles appear in newspaper puzzle sections alongside crosswords and jumbles.
