crashpads
Friends' floors, basically
Crashpads are thick foam mats used by boulderers to cushion falls from low climbing routes.
Unlike roped climbing, bouldering happens close to the ground, making portable padding essential: We stacked three crashpads under the overhang.
The term borrows from the older slang crashpad—a place to sleep temporarily—since both involve somewhere to land safely.
