crash diving
Rapid submarine submersion
Crash diving is the emergency rapid submersion of a submarine, typically to evade enemy detection or attack.
The maneuver sacrifices the controlled descent of normal diving for speed, taking the vessel underwater as quickly as possible: The captain ordered crash diving when enemy aircraft appeared on the horizon.
The term occasionally appears figuratively for any hasty, drastic descent or retreat.
