court-appointed counsel

State-provided lawyer

Court-appointed counsel is a lawyer assigned by a court to represent a defendant who cannot afford to hire one.

In the United States, the Sixth Amendment guarantees this right in criminal cases: The judge asked if he could afford a lawyer or needed court-appointed counsel.

Also called a public defender, though public defenders work for dedicated offices while court-appointed counsel may be private attorneys paid by the state.
