counterpointing

Weaving melodic lines

Counterpointing is setting contrasting elements against each other for effect.

The term comes from music, where counterpoint is the technique of combining independent melodic lines.

In broader use, a filmmaker might be counterpointing cheerful music with tragic imagery, or a writer counterpointing optimism with despair: The documentary kept counterpointing interviews with the politicians against footage of what was actually happening.
