conversion error
Data transformation failure
A conversion error occurs when data changes format incorrectly or incompletely—translating between file types, units of measurement, currencies, or character encodings.
In programming, it typically means attempting to transform one data type into another incompatible one: The script threw a conversion error when it tried to parse the string as an integer.
The term also applies to mistakes in manual conversions: A conversion error turned 5 kilometers into 5 miles.
