conversation pits
Recessed living areas
A conversation pit is a sunken seating area built into a floor, typically surrounding a fireplace or central table.
Popular in mid-century modern architecture of the 1960s and 70s, the design creates an intimate space for socializing by literally lowering guests below the main floor level: The house still has its original shag-carpeted conversation pit.
