confabulated
Made up memories
Confabulated is the past tense of confabulate, which has two distinct meanings.
The older sense means to chat or converse casually: We confabulated over coffee.
In psychology, to confabulate is to fill gaps in memory with fabricated details, believed by the speaker to be true—not lying, but unconscious invention.
More recently, confabulated describes AI-generated false information presented as fact: The chatbot confabulated a citation that doesn't exist.
