command modules
Spacecraft control sections
Command modules are the control centers of multi-part spacecraft, housing the crew and primary navigation systems.
The term comes from the Apollo program, where the command module was the cone-shaped capsule that carried astronauts and returned them to Earth while other components were jettisoned: Only the command module survived reentry.
By extension, any central control unit in a complex system.
