combat badge

A combat badge is a military insignia awarded to service members who have engaged in direct ground combat with enemy forces.

Different branches and specialties have distinct badges: the Combat Infantryman Badge for infantry soldiers, the Combat Action Badge for non-infantry personnel, the Combat Medical Badge for medics.

These decorations recognize participation in active fighting rather than mere presence in a war zone: He earned his combat badge during his second deployment.
