cold bath
Chilly water immersion
A cold bath is immersion in unheated water, typically for health benefits or invigoration.
The practice ranges from ice baths used by athletes for recovery to cold plunges taken for mental clarity or discipline.
Figuratively, a cold bath is any sudden, sobering experience: The rejection letter was a cold bath after months of optimism.
