laconicum

Ancient hot chamber

A laconicum is a dry sweating room in ancient Roman baths, intensely heated to induce perspiration.

Named for the Spartans (Laconians), who favored this style of bathing, it was typically a small circular chamber with a domed ceiling.

The term appears mainly in archaeology and classical studies: The excavation revealed a well-preserved laconicum adjacent to the tepidarium.
